Artist Statement Watercolor Flowers- Victoria Thompson

IMG_20200106_122723

My artwork is made on watercolor paper with a dark blue background. It has a light green stem with black spikes, and tiny purple and green flowers in the middle. The subject matter is a milkweed flower. The stem is a mix of light and dark green, and the green on the flowers alternates from dark to light.

I created my artwork with watercolors on watercolor paper. I used wet on dry and layering to create this piece of artwork. I used big and small paint brushes to apply the watercolors. It took me several class periods to complete it.

My inspiration for this artwork was a field trip my grade went to. While I was there, I saw a milkweed flower. I tried to show happiness in my artwork because the milkweed is healthy and is at a stage of life where it is at its best. My artwork addresses a social issue because it shows that there are still good things in this world that are thriving, even though we learn about bad things every day and never focus on the good.

My goals as an artist is to make detailed pieces that look like what I’m trying to make. I want people to be able to look at my artwork and know exactly what it is. I believe I did a good job and did reach my goal, although in some areas I believe I could have done better, I believe my artwork does looks pretty much like a milkweed flower.

I learned from this artwork how to do layering and dry on dry watercolor. My piece is mostly like how I imagined, I just wish the small flowers in the middle were a bit cleaner and I wish my background was cleaner as well. However, I love the stem and the spikes. This will influence my future artworks because I am now more experienced with watercolor.
