- contrast and contradictions- A character actions or thoughts are the opposite of what you’d expect. ASK: why would the character act or feel this way?
- Tough questions
- Aha moment- A character figures out something important to herself or the plot. ASK: how might this realization change things?
- words of the wiser- An older or wiser mentor gives advice or life lesson to a character. ASK: What is the life lesson and how might it change the character?
- memory moment-A flashback or pause in the story to reflect on a memory. These memories often hold important information even if the reader doesn’t know it yet. ASK: why might this memory be important to the forward progression of the story.
- again and again- An image, word, or situation that is repeated of often that the reader wonders about the importance, ASK: why might the author bring this p again and again?
