Artist Statement -Watercolor Plants

By: Courtney Beaudoin

My artwork is an image of an Oak tree at night with a treehouse that looks like an acorn in it. All of the picture has an element of black in it to make it look like nighttime. This was a long process, but it affected the painting pretty well.

To make my artwork, I used the paper towel technique, wet on dry technique, the detailed technique, and a little bit of the wet on wet technique. I made a sketch of the image first and then I started by painted the tree and the treehouse first and then the background last.

The deck on the Oak tree at Tower Hill Botanical gardens inspired my watercolor painting. Then, I looked up an image of an Oak tree with a treehouse on it to make my painting different. I used the photograph that I found online to make my painting, but I added my own twist to it to make it different than the photo.

The goal for this painting was to make a watercolor painting that was inspired by a picture of a plant that you either took at Tower Hill or you looked up a picture of a plant that you saw at the garden and used it for your inspiration. You also had to use multiple watercolor techniques such as wet on wet or detail techniques to make your watercolor.

I think that my watercolor painting turned out pretty well overall, but there were a few parts of it that didn’t work out as I wanted. For example, It was hard to make the nighttime realistic, and there were some spots in the painting were the black of the night isn’t dark enough. Now that I think of it, I should’ve added blues of purples to make the painting more interesting. That is what I think of my project.
