GMO’s

Genetically modified organisms or GMO’s are organisms that do not occur in nature.  Their DNA has been modified by injecting a new gene into them.  This is done to change a characteristic or to add a new one.  This is similar to breeding in/out characteristics.  However this is a much more targeted approach.  Like all things there are pros and cons to genetically modifying organisms.  There has been debate about this topic for quite some time.  There are several circumstances where GMOs are beneficial, and several circumstances where many ethical issues arise.   GMO plants tend to be healthier, because they have been developed resist different diseases.  However there is a concern on how genetically modified organisms will affect the rest of the ecosystem.  For the majority of farmers genetically modified seeds are unnecessary.  They are more expensive than regular seeds and the advantages they give often are not worth it.  Modifying genes in humans is controversial as well.  In my opinion, using these techniques to cure diseases should be encouraged.  However, using it to enhance a normal child seems unethical.  Care must be taken to protect gene diversity as well as not to cause harm.
