This past Friday, October 20th, the Groton-Dunstable Music Honors Society hosted their first Open Mic Night of the school year. Many students were worried about how many participants and spectators it would attract, as it took place at the same time as the popular annual senior night football game. Needless to say, all were very pleasantly surprised when the event drew in large crowds of students both past and present, along with many members of the greater Groton-Dunstable community.
The night saw a large variety of acts take the stage, with performances including many feel-good acoustic acts, passionate vocalists, a jazz combo, and a punk rock group. The high levels of creativity and love for music that exist in the GD student body were apparent as ever last Friday, as we witnessed a large number of great original pieces in addition to the many fantastic covers that were played.
Maggie Wickham, a Junior at GDRHS delivered an astounding performance of Adele’s “Turning Tablesâ€Â, but experienced some microphone problems in the middle of her performance. “The Open Mic was a nice environment, very welcomingâ€Â, Wickham said afterwards. “The technical difficulties I experienced weren’t a big deal, and the crowd wasn’t judgemental at all, we all just laughed it off.â€Â
All of the students’ performances made for a truly unforgettable night. The next big community event from the music program is this year’s winter concert. It will be taking place on Wednesday December 13th in the PAC, and it’s sure to be a show that you won’t want to miss.
