Alzheimer’s

In the Alzheimer’s Disease case study there is a young woman who is diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease and her younger sister Suzanne fears that she may have the disease as well. Suzanne and her husband decide to get her tested for the disease as well as she worries that she may be a carrier and possibly pass the gene on to any children she might have. After the diagnostic test Suzanne finds that she had inherited the disease from her father and if she has children there is a 50% chance that they will have the gene as well. The disease comes from a mutated APP gene that causes complications in the brain by creating a large amount of thick and sticky peptides that causes an accumulation of the protein in the brain and creates blockage. This is what causes the degeneration of the person’s brain and prevents them from functioning the same way they did before the disease began to affect them.
