Four Corners Activity
The Four Corners Activity was an activity done on the first day of class to help us form opinions and make personal decisions involving genetic diseases. We were asked to agree or disagree with questions involving people’s personal genetic situations. This activity was a clear example of Learning Goal #6: Personal Genetics. I was forced to put myself in someone else’s shoes and make decisions based on how drastic I thought the situation was personally. This helped me understand how ethics will and do impact my personal genetic decisions. In this activity, it was brought to my attention that some people have to make the decision to either tell their family/partner about their life-threatening disease or to keep it from them. The difficult part about this conversation is that you don’t really have a say, or your opinion doesn’t matter all that much, because you are talking about someone else’s body. As much as I believe that no one should keep that information from someone, it really doesn’t matter what I believe. It’s completely up to the person with the disorder and, unless I discover that I have a disorder, it’s irrelevant what I think is right and wrong.
