Self-portrait

IMG-0050

My artwork is a side view of my face with symbols replacing important details on my face. For my eye, eyebrow, and mouth I chose to replace them with a baseball, hot dog, and a candy cane. For my cheek, ear, and scar I chose to replace them with the arc reactor, a cat ear, and a lightning bolt. Lastly I decided to do spikes for my hair and multiple colors for my face.

When I created my artwork I used colored pencils, markers, and watercolor. When I colored in my face I used metallic colored pencils and then used metallic watercolor to paint over the colored pencils. When I painted the metallic gold at the bottom of my face I let it drip down.

My inspiration for my artwork was the I Spy books, since they show  a lot of realistic objects. My artwork shows a social issue by using spikes on my head and dripping paint. I used spikes to show that many people keep their mind protected and don’t let people in. Also I used dripping paint to show that people’s heads(mind) have a large control over their body that, at times, can be negative. I tried to show a playful emotion in my artwork.

Some goals for me as an artist are to be faster in my production and to get better at drawing and using paint. This piece helped me to understand and use paint better, or at least helped me with watercolor. Besides helping me use watercolor better this artwork wasn’t that helpful or that fun to make. I feel this way because my drawing didn’t really improve and I didn’t have a solid plan for my artwork.

While creating this artwork I learned that I like having options for what to do and that I need to practice realistic drawing. The final piece wasn’t really how I imagined it would end up because at the beginning of the assignment I didn’t know what I was going to do and I just thought things up as I went along. For my future artwork I will try harder and think things out more. Also I will try to finish my artwork earlier than I did with this one.
