Blog Post #1 – Essential Question

My beginning essential question for my project is, “What is Equine Hyperkalemic Periodic Paralysis (HYPP), what it does to the equine body, and how is the gene for HYPP is passed on?” I’m interested in this topic due to my love for horses of all kinds. My interest in HYPP peaked when I noticed that HYPP is most common in ‘halter’ horses within the stock breeds. When you see breeding ads for Halter horses, you see the words in small print; ‘Five Panel Negative’, or you may see ‘HYPP N/H’ in even smaller print, due to the severity of the disease and what it can do in homozygous dominant horses.
