DARE Report from 5th Grade

DARE Report

By Lauren Haggerty

DARE was very educational and helpful. Thanks to the DARE classes, I know not to smoke, drink alcohol under 18, and more. I have learned the consequences of what would happen if I do these things. But luckily, I know not to do these things. We also learned about peer pressure which was also very important.

The first thing we talked about in DARE was tobacco and cigarettes. Smoking can cause breathing problems. Smoking can also cause heart disease. Lung cancer is mainly caused by smoking. Did you know there are 200 known poisons in 1 cigarette? People over the age of 18 can buy tobacco products. If you are under the age of 18, it is illegal to buy tobacco products. But who would want to smoke? If you smoke it can affect the people around you. About 7,330 people that do not smoke, but inhale second hand smoke, die of lung cancer each year. Over 480,000 people die from tobacco each year. Isn’t that terrible!

Marijuana is similar to smoking a cigarette. Marijuana can cause breathing problems. It can affect your brain and body. There is more tar in marijuana than a cigarette. You might not think this is possible, but marijuana smoke contains 50% to 70% more of some cancer causing than tobacco smoke. Unlike smoking tobacco, marijuana is illegal in the United States.

Alcohol is another dangerous substance in the world. It can slow down the brain and body. If you drink too much alcohol, it might put you in a coma or even worse, death. If you drink alcohol while driving, there is a big chance that you will end up in a car accident. If you are under the age of 21, you cannot s drink alcohol. Luckily, most teens do not drink alcohol.

Peer pressure is very common with kids. Sometimes, someone can convince you to do something that you do not want to do or is not safe. If someone ever offers you a cigarettes, or beer or anything like that, say no or walk away. You can just ignore them as wells.

I have learned a lot from DARE. I am so glad I got to participate in this program because now I am more aware of what not to do. Make the right choice. Would you want to risk your life for smoking or something like that?
