\nshe was receding
\nthe ocean\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s depth of her memory
\nevaporating like steam<\/p>\n
Alzheimers
\nhid her crossword puzzles
\nlost her crochet hooks
\nstripped her photo albums
\nravaged her appetite<\/p>\n
when she left a roast smoking in the oven
\nhe cut off the gas for good
\ntook her to the local buffet<\/p>\n
she clung to his arm
\ntheir independence
\nas unsteady as his shuffling gait<\/p>\n
he led her gently to a booth
\nthen made his way to the
\nsalad bar<\/p>\n
breathing hard from the effort
\nlegs numb from neuropathy
\nhe leaned against the soup stand
\ndipped a ladle into the brine
\nfished for carrots until he had filled a plate
\nwith soft orange slices
\ntender enough for her to eat
\nwith ill-fitting false teeth<\/p>\n
sighing, he sat and reached across the table
\nher frightened, clouded eyes seemed to clear
\nand for a moment
\nthis pair, alone in the restaurant,
\nheld the universe
