Fabric Lab

In this lab I learned how to take fiber evidence and have it be tested in a forensic lab. Fabric is important because it can tell investigators what the person was wearing if fibers were left behind. There are tests that the investigators which include chemical testing, a water retention test, and a flame test. Investigators would also look at the fabrics weave pattern and see if its a knitted product. Each test would bring the closer to the fabric that was found at a scene. There are natural (cotton and wool) and synthetic (rayon, polyester, and nylon) fibers. The filament count in a natural fiber is more of one like a yarn or thread like material. A synthetic fiber can have a single of multi filament thread. Natural fabrics are more likely to be knitted in a piece of clothing. Fibers are a big part in forensic evidence and are an overlooked piece of evidence to someone that is just beginning to learn about forensics.
