My narrative artwork depicts a man standing in front of some potatoes at different stages of growth on the ground in front of a series of shelves, drawers, and cupboards. There is a poster reading “Schiaparelli Crater†hanging on some of the drawers, as well as some green books and an astronaut’s helmet.
I created this project by first creating an outline of everything that I wanted to include in pencil. Next, I outlined the drawers and the words “Schiaparelli Crater†because the drawers were white and so wouldn’t be colored in. After that, I used markers to color everything in, and the markers that I was using for the ground dried out while I was working on a different project.ÂÂ
This project was based on the part of the book The Martian where Mark Watney, after being stranded in the Schiaparelli Crater on Mars, grows food with the potatoes that the crew brought with them for Thanksgiving. I tried to make it seem like Mark is proud of his work.
My goals for this project were to accurately display a part of The Martian and provide some clues as to what is happening in the background. I think that I did this. I put the helmet on the shelf to show that he wasn’t on Earth and I put the Schiaparelli Crater poster there to show that he was in a Martian crater.
Overall, I like this project because of the potatoes and the drawers. It was fun to make.
