Hour Glass Artist Statement

Artist Statement By:Alex Hillenberg
I would describe my artwork as an hourglass, but inside of the hour glass instead of sand is an image. On the top of the hourglass is the image of the ocean with an iceberg, on the bottom is the image of a polluted city with polluted water. Coming down from the top of the hourglass is the water from the ocean turning into the polluted city. The obvious principale in my work is global warming. In my work, I used an assortment of colored pencils to complete the work, along with sharpie and some pant to add the polluted water to the picture. One of the techniques I used in my piece was burnishing. It is when you press down really hard with colored pencils to make the image darker. The work I made was inspired by a picture I saw of something similar to something I made. The social issue behind my work is global warming, and the emotion that is supposed to be shown in my work is a sad emotion. It is supposed to be a sad effect that has people awaken to the thought of what the future may be like. My goals for this piece were to demonstrate how the earth might look in the future. As far as I know I have reached my goals because the earth is looking something like this now. Creating this artwork I learned that the real world is a scary place. The final piece is what I imagined I could do as an artist. I believe the is the best I could have portrayed what I was trying to. This will influence my future artwork because I will focus more on real life.
