7th Grade Poetry Portfolio: Reflection

April 27, 2015

Dear Ms. Maio,

The poem that I consider to be my best is my ekphrastic because I feel like I really went into the bronze ballerina’s mind and created a story. For example, I said things like, “I just try to remember while I’m staring up, what it was like to just dance before the industry got too tough.” I think that I went above and beyond of what the picture shows. I described what she looked like, but then I based most of my ideas off of the movie Center Stage. For example, “It was about worrying if you had the right body, or the right face or the right hair.” I also added in some of my own opinions about the world of dance. “Ballet became nothing but something to worry about. Everybody became jealous if they weren’t the lead, or didn’t get the part they wanted.” I feel like this on my most creative and mature poem.

I could’ve used more creativity in my other poems. The poem that could really use some creativity is my villanelle to really capture my feelings about the sun. It has some nice rhymes like, “The sun makes my day, because I get to wear shades, It just whiles the hours away.” The rhymes were just very childish. I could’ve written more mature yet creative things like, “The sun holds a key to a whole different life, It takes in hope like they’re husband and wife. It gives off as much hope as it does light.” I feel as though my other poems like the villanelle have a younger touch to them, instead of a highly mature tone like the ekphrastic. I feel as though my poetry needs to gain that little step between childish and low maturity. Most serious poets seem to have that little mature spark.

Every year when I write poetry it brings out something different in me. This year I feel like it affected me more than ever. I’ve learned about a lot of different kinds which lets me express my feelings about different things in different ways. With some of the formats like the ekphrastic, I was able to find a more mature part of myself which I didn’t know I contained. When in the process of writing my poetry, I even learned even more about the people and things I love that I didn’t know. It brings out my inner passion of writing about my world around me. I hope that the other kids that write poetry can feel the same inspiration as I did.

Sincerely,

Abby Cronin
